Elmira, OR

Elmira is an unincorporated community and census-designated place west of Eugene and north of Veneta, near the Long Tom River and Fern Ridge Reservoir. Oregon Route 126 runs nearby, connecting the community with Eugene, the Fern Ridge area, and the wider Willamette Valley. Elmira was first known as Duckworth, but a local business owner persuaded postal authorities to change the name in 1884, choosing Elmira after Elmira, California. The 2020 census counted 546 residents.

Water has shaped the local map as much as the road. In 1942, the Long Tom River was dammed to create Fern Ridge Reservoir, controlling floods while opening space for fishing, boating, and swimming. Elmira belongs to Fern Ridge School District, whose schools include Elmira Elementary and Elmira High School along with campuses in nearby Veneta. Farms, reservoir traffic, school routes, and the road toward Eugene all meet in this small Lane County community. Elmira feels like a place where a name change, a river project, and a school district each left a visible mark on the same stretch of valley.
