Elmore, AL

Elmore is a town in western Elmore County, about fifteen miles north of Montgomery and near Millbrook and Coosada. The 2020 census counted 1,280 residents. State Highway 14 runs through town, with Highway 143 heading north and Interstate 65 roughly five miles west. Students attend the Elmore County Public School System, whose campuses sit outside the town limits. Elmore's local government, volunteer fire service, post office, community center, and small business district handle the everyday needs of a place whose working landscape still reaches into surrounding farm country.

The town grew around the family and land of General John Archer Elmore and Benjamin Fitzpatrick. Elmore had a school by 1870 and a post office by 1873. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad arrived in 1878, turning the town into a shipping point for nearby farmers; a depot followed in 1900. Passenger service ended in 1969. Elmore first incorporated in 1906, then reincorporated in 1997 after municipal elections became necessary to keep funding for the volunteer fire department. Hickory Knoll and the Peterson and Peterson Store remain listed heritage properties, while Carmichael-Mercer Community Center provides a local gathering address.
