Elmwood, NE

Elmwood sits on a rise in southeast Cass County, named for the grove of elm trees that caught first postmaster David McCaig's eye. The first townsite was near Stove Creek, about two and a half miles northeast of today's village, before the settlement took shape on its present hilltop. That shift is a small but revealing piece of local geography: water drew the first site, while the later village grew on higher ground with roads and the post office at its center. Cass County's larger story runs through Plattsmouth and the Missouri River, but Elmwood has always been an inland farm-country stop.

Elmwood's current map is easy to read in a few stops. The library keeps regular hours and event programming; the Community Center hosts home-cooked meals, reunions, and gatherings; and the annual Elmwood Pie Ride brings cyclists through town. Village board meetings meet at the Learning Center, while the post office, gas station, and village office serve as familiar places for notices and errands. The local scoop is a town that still makes room for routine and ritual: a tree-name origin, a hilltop main street, and a community calendar built around shared rooms and a pie ride.
