Elsinore, UT

Elsinore is a Sevier County town whose name comes from Denmark and whose history runs through farming, church life, and sugar beets. Danish converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints settled here in 1874 and named the place for Kronborg Castle at Elsinore, the setting associated with Hamlet. The area was known as Little Denmark in the late 19th century; in 1880, as many as 92 percent of the 223 residents were Danish or Swedish, and church meetings continued in Danish into the first half of the 20th century. That heritage is still the best way to understand why this small town has such a distinct name and cultural starting point.

Most work grew from the land. Wheat came first, followed by sugar beets, ranching, dairy production, and sheep raised for wool. The Utah-Idaho Sugar Company operated a beet-sugar factory near Elsinore from 1911 to 1929 before beet blight closed it; the factory was part of Utah’s wider beet-sugar experiment. The nearby Kimberly gold rush was short-lived, but Elsinore residents supplied it. Elsinore’s local map is an agricultural town carrying a Danish settlement story and the remains of a brief industrial turn.
