Elton, LA

Elton is a town in northeastern Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana, on U.S. Route 190 between Kinder and Eunice. Route 190 leads about nine miles west to Kinder and sixteen miles east to Eunice, while Jennings, the parish seat, is about twenty-six miles south via Louisiana Highway 26. That puts Elton in the Jennings micropolitan area without making it a suburb of anything; it is its own small parish town with the highway doing the long-distance work.

The name has an old-world footnote. Local tradition says the wife of pioneer settler J. Henderson chose “Elton” after reading about an English town in County Durham near Middlesbrough. Elton incorporated as a village in 1911. Today, Elton Elementary, Elton High School, and the Elton Branch of the Jefferson Davis Parish Library give the town a set of everyday institutions, and the 2020 census counted 992 people, down from 1,128 in 2010.
