About Elwood
Elwood is a small Atlantic County community inside Mullica Township, in the wooded New Jersey Pinelands between Hammonton, Egg Harbor City, and the Mullica River country. The township was formed in 1838 from the western part of Galloway Township and once covered a much larger footprint, including most of Hammonton and part of Egg Harbor City. Today Elwood is a spread-out place of homes, pines, farm roads, and local landmarks such as the Elwood Deli and Weekstown Firehouse, with the Atlantic City region within the wider travel orbit.
School and township life give the community its everyday structure. Mullica Township School District serves younger students, while the Greater Egg Harbor Regional district sends local high-school students to Cedar Creek High School. The Mullica in the Pines Historical Society operates from the Hilda Frame School in nearby Nesco, keeping township history in an old schoolhouse setting. Elwood's local character comes from that combination of Pine Barrens landscape and practical connections: firehouse events, school routes, township roads, and a river-and-pines history that is easy to miss if you stay on the main highways.
