About Elyria

Elyria is a small McPherson County crossroads at Old U.S. 81 Highway and Comanche Road, southeast of the city of McPherson. The settlement sits in the open agricultural country of central Kansas, where the road network matters as much as any formal town center. Its current designation as an unincorporated community and census-designated place describes a cluster of residents and rural addresses that look to McPherson for many services while remaining surrounded by fields and long views.

Rail travel once gave Elyria a different connection. The Missouri Pacific’s Eldorado-McPherson route carried passenger trains through the region, but passenger service had ended by 1946. Today, the nearest Amtrak stop is in Newton, where the Southwest Chief makes its daily east-west run, so regional travel begins with a drive. Everyday life here follows county roads, farm seasons, school and work trips, and the practical demands of maintaining property in open country. McPherson is close enough for errands and jobs, while the roads around Elyria lead quickly into a landscape where grain handling, machinery, wind, and weather remain part of the routine.
