Elysian, MN

Elysian is a small city in Le Sueur and Waseca counties, wrapped around the northeast end of Lake Elysian in southern Minnesota. The town was platted in 1856 and named for Elysium, the mythic home of the blessed; it incorporated in 1884. That name fits the setting without needing much embellishment: water is close, the land rolls into farm country, and Minnesota Highway 60 gives the community its main east-west connection. The city is distinct from Elysian Township, which makes the local map a little more complicated than the name suggests.

Lake Elysian is the big local reference point, with public boat access and a fishing-and-boating culture that brings a seasonal swing to town. Elysian also sits inside the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown school community, so school events and the neighboring towns are part of the weekly circuit. With a population around seven hundred, the city is small enough for the lake, highway, school district, and main streets to overlap in everyday life. Elysian is southern Minnesota lake country with a settled town grid and a name borrowed from Greek mythology.
