About Emmetsburg
Emmetsburg is Palo Alto County’s seat, an Iowa city of 3,706 residents in the 2020 census arranged around the southern bay of Five Island Lake. Highways 4 and 18 meet here, the Des Moines River runs just east, and the lake gives the city a second edge beyond the courthouse and downtown. Irish famine-era immigrants settled the area in the mid-1800s, and the city took its name from the Irish nationalist Robert Emmet. That Irish connection still shows up every March, when a week-long St. Patrick’s celebration brings a parade, pageants, reunions, and other events through town.

Five Island Lake handles the outdoor side of the local calendar with boating, fishing, swimming, a community center, golf course, and the Five Island Trail. Iowa Lakes Community College adds a campus and Smith Wellness Center, while the public and Catholic schools keep education visible locally. The local scoop is a county-seat city where the courthouse, Irish heritage, lake, and community college all sit in the same northwestern Iowa orbit.
