Emmonak, AK

Emmonak is a remote Yup’ik village on the Yukon River delta, about ten miles inland from the Bering Sea. Like most rural Alaskan communities, it is completely off the road grid. People get around by boat during the summer and switch to snowmachines or four-wheelers once the river freezes, while small bush planes handle travel and freight to and from regional hubs like Bethel and Anchorage. The town actually relocated a short distance north in the 1960s after severe flooding washed away the original settlement.

Home to roughly 800 people, Emmonak serves as a vital service hub for the lower Yukon area. Local employment centers around the school, health clinic, city government, and tribal organizations, supplemented by a surge of commercial salmon fishing and processing work during the summer months. Subsistence harvesting is a major part of everyday life, with families regularly heading out onto the river and tundra to hunt, fish, and gather berries. Community gatherings, school basketball games, and cultural events keep everyone connected through the long winter.
