Englewood, NJ

Englewood took shape after the Northern Railroad reached the area in 1859. J. Wyman Jones acquired rights to six farms, laid out named streets, and registered the village on August 15 of that year. The name’s origin remains uncertain: city histories connect it either to the earlier English Neighborhood or to the Engle family and the wooded hill section. Englewood completed its incorporation as a city in March 1899. The city’s preservation inventory credits the railroad with shaping a compact downtown and nearby Victorian neighborhoods, while also noting early-19th-century stone houses and East Hill estates. The 2020 census counted 29,308 residents, up from 27,147 in 2010, across 4.93 square miles.
