Enigma, GA

Enigma is a Berrien County town of 1,058 residents in the 2020 census, nine miles east of Tifton on U.S. Highway 82. John A. Ball founded the settlement between 1876 and 1880, when neighbors knew it as Gunn and Weston. Ball later wanted a formal name; Lax and Enigma were proposed, but Lax was already in use. Enigma became the town's name, and the Georgia General Assembly incorporated it in 1906. The name still gives the place an immediate personality before a visitor reaches the town center.

The town's school history began with a one-room building on the north side of town and grew to a three-room school before county consolidation closed it in 1954. Today, U.S. 82 carries the town's regional traffic while fields and pine woods spread toward the rest of Berrien County. Enigma also has a literary connection: Georgia writer Harry Crews used the town as the setting for his first novel, The Gospel Singer. City Hall, the highway, and the old school story make Enigma feel like a small crossroads with a name people remember.
