Ethete, WY

Ethete is a census-designated community in Fremont County on the Wind River Indian Reservation, home to the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes. The 2010 census counted 1,553 residents. The reservation covers about 2.2 million acres, and Ethete and Arapahoe host many Northern Arapaho tribal and community functions. That broader setting matters when reading the local map: Ethete is part of a living reservation community, with its own schools and gathering places, within a landscape shared by two tribal nations.

St. Michael's Mission is one of Ethete's central historic places. Episcopal missionary John Roberts began a mission serving Arapaho and Shoshone people near the present community around 1887; the later mission buildings were arranged around an oval and include the log Church of Our Father's House. Today most of Ethete falls within Fremont County School District 14, home to Wyoming Indian Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. The mission, school campuses, reservation roads, and nearby Wind River country make Ethete's public geography legible through several connected places.
