Eudora, AR

Eudora sits on a ridge above the Chicot County Delta, about twenty-five feet higher than the surrounding flatlands. That elevation helped the city survive the Flood of 1927 and later made it a Red Cross camp for thousands of refugees. The ridge first carried Eudora Plantation, a post office, and a ferry across Bayou Macon; twentieth-century railroad development helped turn the site into a city. U.S. Route 65 now connects Eudora with Lake Village, Greenville, and Lake Providence. The 2020 census counted 1,728 residents.

Water still sets the edges of the place. Eudora lies near the Mississippi River and Grand Lake, and the city uses that setting in its Catfish Capital nickname and Great River Road connection. The Eudora Museum, J. Austin White Cultural Center, WPA-built garden center, and 1936 Art Deco city hall keep local history and civic activity in the center. Summerfest adds an annual date to the calendar, while catfish processing and other employers reflect the working Delta around town. Eudora is a city on a high piece of ground in a low landscape, with flood history, river access, and local institutions all meeting along the ridge.
