Eureka, NV

Eureka is an unincorporated town and census-designated place in Eureka County, Nevada, where the county seat sits among the remnants of a nineteenth-century silver boom. Prospectors from Austin settled the place in 1864 after finding silver-lead ore near Prospect Peak, and Eureka became the county seat when the county was formed in 1873. The boom filled the town with smelters, saloons, freight traffic, and the Eureka and Palisade Railroad. By the 1880s, the district had 16 smelters and a booming workforce; when production fell, the smelters closed and their slag piles remained at the ends of Main Street.

The courthouse, built in 1879-80 from locally fired brick and nearby sandstone, still gives Eureka its most recognizable architectural marker. Nearby, the Eureka Sentinel Museum occupies the former newspaper building, while the Eureka Opera House, Jackson House Hotel, and Raine's Market carry other pieces of the old town center. Eureka County School District and the local library keep the civic map current. The place is legible in layers: mine and mill, rail and county seat, then courthouse and museum holding the town's memory in the same compact grid.
