Evans Mills, NY

Evans Mills is a village in the town of Le Ray, northeast of Watertown, in the West Creek valley near the Indian River. The settlement dates to about 1802; mills arrived in 1806, and the community briefly went by Evansville in the mid-19th century. Water shaped the early industry and still gives the village its physical setting, with West Creek flowing northeast toward the Indian River. The village’s name still points back to the mills that gave the first settlement its purpose.

Today, Evans Mills Primary School sits in the village as part of the Indian River Central School District, serving students from pre-kindergarten through third grade. The district also supports families connected to nearby Fort Drum, whose presence places the village within a military community stretching across northern Jefferson County. Evans Mills is therefore easy to read through three linked features: an early mill settlement in a creek valley, a school serving young children at the center of the village, and a location near Fort Drum in northern Jefferson County.
