Boeing builds and tests airplanes beside Paine Field in southwest Everett and was opening another 737 production line there in 2026. On Port Gardner Bay, the Port of Everett moves oversized and high-value cargo, including aerospace components, while Navy ships berth at Naval Station Everett north of downtown. The airport also supports maintenance and flight services; its passenger terminal served nine destinations in the western United States and Hawaiʻi in 2026. Healthcare and county government form another employment base through Providence Regional Medical Center and Snohomish County offices. Everett Community College and Washington State University Everett share an education district in North Everett. Working life is spread visibly among factories, docks, hospitals, government buildings, college campuses, and the naval base. The city occupies ground between Port Gardner Bay and the Snohomish River, with a narrow northern peninsula and a wider southern half.

North Everett contains downtown, older neighborhoods, Everett Station, the college district, and much of the public waterfront. The Boeing complex and other industrial properties spread around Paine Field in the southwest. Port terminals line the bay, while industry and reclaimed sites face the river to the east. Broadway, Evergreen Way, Everett Mall Way, and 19th Avenue carry commercial activity through these areas. Shoreline is divided among shipping, naval, industrial, residential, and recreational uses, so the waterfront changes character several times from north to south. Everett was conceived as an industrial city before it had a municipal government. The Everett Land Company incorporated in November 1890 and acquired 434.15 acres on the peninsula from the Rucker brothers.

Municipal incorporation followed on May 4, 1893, the same year the Great Northern Railway arrived. The Port of Everett followed in 1918 to promote shipping, trade, and timber industries. A later federal decision changed the bay shore again: the Navy selected Everett from 13 candidate ports in 1983, began construction in 1987, and brought Naval Station Everett to initial operating capability in 1994. Ships, cranes, rail lines, and factory buildings still show how each era claimed a different part of the shoreline. Downtown and the waterfront host much of Everett's recurring community activity. Angel of the Winds Arena presents hockey and other events, Funko Field hosts minor-league baseball, and the 2026 Street Tunes program placed painted pianos at the library, arena, Schack Art Center, Imagine Children's Museum, and sites beyond downtown.

Everett Station joins local and regional buses with Sounder commuter rail; a fare-free summer shuttle connected the station to Music at the Marina in 2026. The Port's public marina, the largest on the West Coast, and its waterfront development put recreational boats, restaurants, and new housing near working docks. On the Snohomish side, the Riverfront project is remaking former industrial and landfill ground with housing, shops, recreation, and a riverside trail. New homes and public access are arriving there beside industrial land that remains in use, leaving the eastern shore visibly between two eras.
