Fair Oaks, OR

Fair Oaks is a Douglas County census-designated place at the south end of Driver Valley, along Calapooya Creek between Sutherlin and Nonpareil and upstream from Oakland. The 2020 census counted 238 residents. The name comes from the oak trees around the settlement, and the post office operated from 1878 through 1882 before mail service shifted to Oakland. Calapooya Creek, a 37-mile tributary of the Umpqua River, gives the place a clear geographic relationship to the larger valley.

Modern services follow the same rural pattern. Fair Oaks lies within a county area served by the Fair Oaks, Oakland, Calapooia, and Sutherlin rural fire districts, with mutual aid from neighboring agencies and state and federal land managers during wildfire response. Oakland's road and town services sit just upstream, while Sutherlin provides another nearby connection. Fair Oaks is a small community whose identity comes from the creek valley, oak-covered setting, and the practical network of nearby towns and rural districts that supports it.
