Fairbury, NE

Fairbury is the Jefferson County seat in southeastern Nebraska, with 3,970 residents in the 2020 census. The city grew around the railroad and the Little Blue River: it began near a sawmill, became a shipping center, and later hosted the Western Division headquarters of the Rock Island Railroad for nearly 80 years. When the Rocky Mountain Rocket stopped running in 1965 and the headquarters moved to Des Moines, Fairbury lost a major piece of its railroad economy. The old depot now serves as the Rock Island Railroad Depot Museum, and the courthouse square still carries the shape of a rail-built county seat. Fairbury remains the retail and service center for Jefferson County, with public schools, Jefferson Community Health Center, manufacturing, a farmers co-op, and city services keeping people coming in from the surrounding roads.

City Park hosts Nebraska’s largest July 4 flea market, and current city work includes water restrictions, park tree maintenance, brownfield cleanup, and community redevelopment. Those details give Fairbury a useful split identity: the railroad city it was built to be, and a present-day county town making practical use of its courthouse, schools, factories, shops, and park. The rail story is still visible, but it is only one part of how Fairbury keeps going.
