Fairchilds, TX

Fairchilds is a Fort Bend County village four miles northeast of Needville, centered on Farm to Market Road 361 and Needville-Fairchilds Road. FM 361 runs diagonally through the village toward Long Point and State Highway 36, while Big Creek and Fairchilds Creek shape the surrounding farm country. The Fairchild Farmer Co-op Gin and a handful of businesses still mark the crossroads.

The settlement is named for Philo Fairchilds, who built a house nearby around 1840. Theo Aderholz, August Bede, and Charles Blohm established the village in 1890, and northern Mennonites formed a colony on Big Creek in 1896. About fifty families built roads, businesses, and schools before malaria and the 1900 Galveston hurricane pushed many settlers away. A post office operated from 1912 to 1918, and the village later kept a small commercial base of stores, feed, tires, and farm services. The local scoop is a German and Mennonite settlement story written into a Fort Bend road grid, with the old gin and creek crossings still giving Fairchilds its shape.
