Fairfield, ME

Fairfield, Maine's census-designated place, is the central village within the much larger Town of Fairfield. The CDP counted 2,616 people in 2020. Settlement began near the Kennebec River in 1771, and William Kendall's mill and land purchase in 1780 gave the village its older Kendall's Mills name. The Town of Fairfield incorporated in 1788, but the CDP is only the compact village portion: streets, riverfront, downtown buildings, and civic offices gathered around the Kennebec, and the CDP does not include every settlement in the surrounding town.

The village's present-day map follows the same practical lines. U.S. Route 201 and I-95 connect Fairfield to Waterville and the rest of the Kennebec Valley, while the river and historic downtown keep local business close to the older center. Kennebec Valley Community College's 70-acre Fairfield campus adds a substantial educational presence, with classrooms and student activity just beyond the traditional village core. The result is a place that serves as both a river town and a regional education stop, without needing to be confused with the full town's population or geography. The Kennebec also keeps the center visually open, with bridges, banks, and older buildings marking the transition between village streets and the wider valley. That distinction keeps the village's population and landmarks in the same frame when you are looking at a map or planning a stop.

The wider Town of Fairfield becomes part of the picture north of the CDP. Hinckley, Fairfield Center, Shawmut, and other outlying settlements belong to the same town, and the Hinckley side includes Good Will-Hinckley, the L.C. Bates Museum, and the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences. That broader map matters when you are traveling through the area, but the Fairfield CDP itself is the Kennebec-side village at the center: Kendall's old mill site, the downtown streets, the college campus, and the river all sit within that smaller footprint.
