Fairfield occupies the northeastern part of Rockbridge County along U.S. Route 11, with I-81/I-64 forming its northwestern edge. Lexington lies about 11 miles southwest, Greenville about 12 miles northeast, and the interstate gives the community a direct connection to Staunton and the Shenandoah Valley.
