Fairhaven, CA

Fairhaven sits beside Humboldt Bay, where the waterfront’s shipbuilding history is tied to the lumber trade that built the north coast. In 1867 Danish-born shipbuilder Hans Ditlev Bendixsen opened a yard here and began building vessels for moving timber and supplies. His yard produced the C.A. Thayer, a lumber schooner launched in 1895 that is now preserved at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. Fairhaven’s workers lived close to the yard, and ship launchings became community occasions as the bay connected local mills with Pacific ports.

Today the CDP remains a compact unincorporated community in Humboldt County, with access from the bay-side road system and the working waterfront of the broader Eureka area. The industrial shoreline is still part of local planning, while historical collections preserve photographs and records of Bendixsen’s yard. The old shipbuilding story gives Fairhaven a particular scale: homes and access roads sit beside an industrial landscape designed for vessels larger than the community itself. A visit may focus on the Thayer; the local setting is the bay, the lumber routes, and the people who made both work together.
