About Fairland
Fairland Recreational Park crosses the Montgomery–Prince George’s county line, a useful clue to how this unincorporated community works. Of the park’s 322 acres on the Montgomery County side, only 39 are developed; the remainder stays natural, while the adjoining Prince George’s side holds a major indoor sports complex. Fairland itself is a Census-defined place rather than a separate municipality. It covered 4.97 square miles of land and had 25,396 residents in the 2020 census. Census estimates for 2020–24 found that 39.7 percent of residents were born outside the United States and 44.5 percent of people age five or older spoke a language other than English at home, giving the community a notably international and multilingual present-day character. The cross-county park provides several different kinds of routine recreation. Its Montgomery side has first-come courts, ballfields, playground space, four reservable picnic shelters, 1.4 miles of hard-surface paths, and more than three miles of natural trails open to hikers, cyclists, and equestrians.
Across the line, the Fairland Sports and Aquatics Complex combines a 50-meter competition pool and leisure pool with gymnastics, tennis, pickleball, fitness, and field facilities. The 23,500-square-foot East County Community Recreation Center sits within the Fairland area and schedules sports, fitness, dance, music, art, and social activities; its outdoor court rotates among pickleball, futsal, and open use. Marilyn J. Praisner Library adds study rooms, a children’s Discovery Room, public computers, Wi-Fi, loanable laptops, world-language materials, and transit-card services. For trips along the US 29 corridor, Flash Orange runs every 15 minutes daily between Briggs Chaney and the Silver Spring Transit Center, where riders can transfer to Metrorail and MARC; a weekday Blue express pattern adds peak-period service toward Burtonsville.
