Fairland, OK

Fairland is an Ottawa County town in the historic Cherokee Nation, with 1,106 residents in the 2020 census. U.S. 60 and State Highway 125 cross the town, which was laid out along the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway after tracks reached the area in 1871. The original plat covered 225 acres, and some homes and businesses moved in from Prairie City before that community faded. Fairland sits on a small rise at the headwaters of Hudson, Ogeechee, and Horse creeks; all three eventually drain toward the Neosho River. Grand Lake's shoreline communities shape the wider local economy.

A post office opened in 1891, and by statehood Fairland had a bank, main street, and businesses serving nearby farms. The Missouri, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway crossed the Frisco here in 1912, adding another layer of rail-town movement. A nearby B.F. Goodrich plant opened in 1945 and closed in 1985, a major economic turn followed by Grand Lake development. Fairland's history runs from Cherokee Nation land and railroad townsite to a highway community tied to the lake.
