Falfurrias, TX

Falfurrias is the Brooks County seat in South Texas, a ranching city built around the ambitions of Edward C. Lasater and the big distances between Corpus Christi, Laredo, and the Rio Grande Valley. The 2020 census counted 4,609 residents. Lasater's ranch began in 1895, the name came from La Mota de Falfurrias, and the railroad reached the ranch in 1904, helping turn a cattle spread into a town and shipping center. The courthouse gives the city a clear center today.

Today, U.S. 281 still runs through the city, with the Brooks County Courthouse and the county's school system keeping Falfurrias at the center of local business. The Border Patrol checkpoint south of town is part of the modern highway story, though the older identity is still ranch, railway, and South Texas trade. Falfurrias's local scoop is a county seat with a name tied to a grove of trees, a ranching founder, and a road that carries the region's traffic north.
