Falls City, OR

Falls City is a Polk County city in Oregon's Coast Range foothills, named for the waterfall in the Little Luckiamute River that passes right through the center of town. The 2020 census counted 1,051 residents. Founded in 1889 and incorporated in 1893, Falls City grew around timber and once had three mills, a bank, a hotel, a soda shop, a jail, and a long list of small-town businesses. The town sits on Highway 22, halfway between Salem and the coast, with the river valley making the route feel tucked away.

The falls still give the city its name, but the newer local story is about keeping the old one in circulation. City and school-district projects have students documenting historic houses and community landmarks, while the city preserves a growing collection of photographs and records. Black Rock Mountain Bike Area sits just west, adding a ride-in-the-woods chapter to the river-and-timber map.
