Farmersburg, IN

Farmersburg began as Ascension in 1853, when a 40-acre plat was laid out in Sullivan County. The town grew along the Evansville–Terre Haute rail line, and mining helped shape its first decades. Ascension Seminary operated here until 1872, adding a school-centered chapter to the industrial story. A post office arrived in 1855. When the mines faded, the town was renamed Farmersburg in 1889, a nod to the farming economy that remained. The 2020 population was 1,069.

That history still gives Farmersburg more texture than its size might suggest. The town sits in Curry Township within the Terre Haute area, with a public library branch and the roads of western Indiana connecting it to neighboring communities. The Old Settlers Festival, begun in 1896, continues a tradition of gathering around local memory and familiar faces. Farmersburg is the kind of place where the railroad, the mines, the seminary, and the farms all belong to the same story, each leaving a mark on how the town understands itself today.
