Farwell, MI

Farwell is a Clare County village west of Clare, where the 2020 census counted 880 residents. Edmund Hall, John Van Riper, and George Hitchcock founded the village in 1870, and the post office opened the next January with Hitchcock as first postmaster. The South Branch of the Tobacco River flows through Farwell and feeds Mill Pond, giving the village a water feature tied to its old mill and settlement geography.

Farwell Area Schools serves the village and several adjacent townships in Clare and Isabella counties. The Clare County Historical Museum keeps the area's logging story nearby, while local roads connect Farwell with Clare and the surrounding central Michigan countryside. The village's map has a clear set of pieces: a nineteenth-century founding, a river branch, a pond, a school district reaching across county lines, and a post office that helped fix the settlement in place.
