Farwell, TX

Farwell sits on the Texas–New Mexico line, with Texico directly across it, and wears two identities at once: Parmer County seat and Panhandle border town. The townsite was surveyed in 1905 on land that had been part of the XIT Ranch, at the point where the Pecos Valley and Northern Texas Railway entered New Mexico. The railroad tracks became the state line, so Farwell’s basic layout grew around a boundary that was also a working transportation route.

That old line still shapes Farwell’s local focus. The courthouse and county offices give it a government role beyond its size, while Farwell ISD and the surrounding farm country keep school and agricultural routines close to town. Farwell’s story runs from XIT cattle and rail freight to small farms and county administration; the Parmer County Museum’s photographs of the early courthouse, school, bank, church, and freight depot make that shift easy to see. Across the tracks, Texico is part of the same everyday border-town setting, but Farwell’s address, government, and schools are distinctly Texas.
