Federal Way, WA

Federal Way sits right along Puget Sound, positioned comfortably between Seattle and Tacoma. The area started as a quiet logging settlement in the late nineteenth century and took its name from Federal Highway 99 when a local high school was built along the route back in 1929. The community officially incorporated in 1990, growing into one of King County's major suburban hubs. Today, its central spot on the Interstate 5 corridor makes it an appealing choice for anyone who wants straightforward access to jobs in both metro centers while staying close to the water and green spaces of the Pacific Northwest.

For decades, the timber giant Weyerhaeuser shaped much of the city's character and growth. In the 1970s, the company built an acclaimed headquarters tucked into hundreds of wooded acres beside North Lake, drawing corporate professionals and Boeing engineers to nearby neighborhoods. While the company eventually moved to Seattle, the campus remains a local treasure. Its terrace-style building blends directly into the surrounding evergreens, creating a peaceful pocket of nature right beside the city's main retail corridors along South 320th Street.

Today, that former corporate campus draws visitors from all over the region thanks to two standout attractions: the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden and the Pacific Bonsai Museum. The bonsai museum offers a quiet walk through an open-air forest gallery featuring historic miniature trees, including a famous Japanese black pine nurtured during World War II internment. Regional travel took a major leap forward with Sound Transit's Link light rail extension into the city, connecting Federal Way Downtown directly to Sea-Tac Airport and downtown Seattle on the 1 Line.

The downtown transit station puts riders steps away from Town Square Park and the Federal Way Performing Arts and Event Center. The surrounding plaza comes alive with seasonal farmers markets, outdoor performances, and community celebrations throughout the summer.
