Fernan Lake Village, ID

Fernan Lake Village is a very small Kootenai County city set against Fernan Lake just east of Coeur d’Alene. The shoreline gives the place its shape, but the backstory belongs to John Fernan, a soldier once stationed at Fort Sherman who homesteaded in the area. In the late 1930s Sam Theis bought the property, ran a saddle shop from the former stable, rented boats on the lake, kept horses, and planted a large Victory garden during World War II. He later platted lakeshore lots and tried repeatedly to have them annexed to Coeur d’Alene.

That annexation never happened. In 1957, thirty-two residents petitioned for incorporation, and the Village of Fernan Lake was created that summer after Coeur d’Alene challenged the move in court. The name eventually settled into Fernan Lake Village, and the city remains a little shoreline jurisdiction beside a much larger Idaho city. The lake, surrounding wooded slopes, and the short drive into Coeur d’Alene do more to define the place than a business district ever could. It is a neighborhood-sized city with a lakefront origin story and its own municipal boundary.
