Fernley, NV

Fernley grew where a railroad stop and federal irrigation works met the western Nevada desert. Southern Pacific timetables first listed the Fernley siding in 1904, and the Truckee Canal began carrying water through the area as part of the Newlands Project in 1905, supporting farms and ranches. The community's depot opened in 1914, remained in railroad use until 1985, and was then moved and restored on Main Street. Fernley incorporated on July 1, 2001, making 2026 its 25th year as a city. Growth has continued well beyond that milestone: the population rose from 22,895 in the 2020 census to an estimated 26,214 in July 2025. The municipal boundary covers 121.31 square miles. For 2020–2024, 72 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied; the median owner-occupied value was $366,700, monthly mortgage costs were $1,873, median gross rent was $1,570, and workers' mean travel time was 27.9 minutes.

Current recreation is distributed across twelve city parks and more than 500 acres of municipal property. Their combined amenities include courts and athletic fields, two dog parks, a skate park, accessible walking paths, picnic areas, and gazebos. Out of Town Park also has a rodeo arena and bandstand, linking large gatherings to a facility that otherwise serves field sports and everyday park use. The Lyon County library branch supplies a smaller-scale year-round gathering place with books, downloads, research databases, and children's story times. Its May 2026 calendar illustrates the range of programming: family board games and LEGO, computer classes, youth coding, table tennis, and book clubs in both English and Spanish. Fernley's incorporation anniversary brought those civic spaces and traditions together in July 2026 through history displays, a craft fair, a concert, a parade, park activities, and fireworks.
