Ferrum, VA

Ferrum is a Franklin County community where a college campus and Blue Ridge tradition share the same name. The census-designated place had 1,827 people in 2020 and sits in the Roanoke metropolitan area, but the local focus is Ferrum College, founded in 1913 as a training school for mountain students. The college grew into a four-year institution, and its Blue Ridge Institute became Virginia’s State Center for Blue Ridge Folklore. That makes Ferrum feel less like a place defined by one road and more like a small community with an academic and cultural campus at its center.

Every October, the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival spreads across the college grounds and living-history farm museum. Musicians, craftspeople, cooks, antique tractors, horse and mule pullers, storytellers, and old-time games bring the region’s working traditions into view without turning them into a museum piece. The Blue Ridge Institute also runs exhibits and programs through the year, so the folklore work is not limited to one weekend. Ferrum’s 1,500-student college, festival calendar, and mountain setting all reinforce each other: students arrive for school, families arrive for the festival, and the community keeps telling its own story through both.
