Fieldale, VA

Nestled along the curves of the Smith River just outside Martinsville, Fieldale is a quiet Henry County community with a fascinating story. Chicago department store giant Marshall Field & Company planned and built the entire village from scratch starting in 1916. Because it was designed as a complete mill town, everything here feels intentional. The cozy craftsman cottages, walkable neighborhood streets, and classic brick architecture along the water give Fieldale a distinct character that stands out in southern Virginia.

For decades, the local mill produced the famous Fieldcrest towels, operating all the way into the early 2000s. To keep workers settled, the company built a full community with its own bank, grocery store, movie theater, schools, recreation center, and housing. Today, much of this village core makes up the Fieldale Historic District, giving newcomers and history buffs an exceptionally well-preserved slice of early 20th-century life.

Long before the textile era, the area was known as Waller's Ford, a river crossing established back in 1770. Today, life in Fieldale revolves around small-town calm and outdoor recreation. The Smith River borders the neighborhood, offering popular spots for paddling, trout fishing, and strolls along the riverside walking trail. With Martinsville just a short drive away for everyday shopping and dining, Fieldale offers an affordable, scenic home base in the foothills.
