Fieldale, VA

Fieldale is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Henry County, Virginia, along the Smith River in the Martinsville micropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 852 people, but the town's defining fact is its form: Marshall Field & Company built Fieldale as a company mill town on roughly 1,800 acres in 1916. The river, old mill site, workers' houses, and community buildings still give the place a shape that comes from a single industrial plan. By 1930, company-owned streets already held industrial mills, houses, and social and commercial institutions, so the riverbank reads as a complete settlement rather than a mill dropped into open country. The district's one-story workers' houses are part of the record, not incidental leftovers.

Textile production began in 1919, making towels for Marshall Field's department stores, and the mill complex operated until 2003. The company town included housing, a post office, bank, grocery, theater, schools, churches, a community center, and the Virginia Home and Fieldale Hotel for unmarried workers. Fieldale began as Waller's Ford, a protected Smith River crossing settled by George Waller and Ann Winston in 1770, before the textile company remade the map. The community center and former clubhouse show how the company provided gathering space alongside paychecks, while the Smith River remains the geographic thread tying the old town together. Fieldale's name still carries the mill's imprint.
