Fifth Ward is a quiet rural community in Avoyelles Parish, spread along Highway 1 roughly ten minutes west of Marksville and a half-hour southeast of Alexandria. Longtime residents often call the area "The Island," a local name dating back to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 when higher ground here kept homes above water. Today, the Fifth Ward Community Center on Schoolhouse Road serves as the neighborhood hub for craft fairs, seasonal markets, and family gatherings.
