That rural territory shares a 35-square-mile city with employment districts and residential areas directly adjoining Madison. Bicycling is one of the clearest connections across this spread-out landscape. Four major commuter routes—the Capital City and Military Ridge state trails, Southwest Commuter Path, and Badger State Trail—cross Fitchburg's network of paths, lanes, and marked routes.

Quarry Ridge adds purpose-built mountain biking, while the city's long-range plan counts roughly 90 miles of bicycle trails, paths, and routes. Fitchburg also reports about 818 acres of parks, open space, and recreation trails across at least 95 areas. In summer 2026, Concerts at McKee paired monthly outdoor performances with youth bands and food carts. The public library scheduled storytimes, book clubs, and pop-up programs in neighborhood parks, while the senior center offered recurring fitness and social activities. The Fitchburg Farmers Market marked its 30th anniversary in 2026, and the city hosted that year's Festa Italia at McKee Farms Park.
