Fitzgerald, GA

Fitzgerald is a charming small town of about 9,000 tucked into south-central Georgia, known for its unique history and friendly pace of life. It was originally established in the 1890s as a place where Union and Confederate veterans could build a community together, which left behind an easy-to-navigate grid of historic streets centered around a classic county courthouse. Today, it offers an affordable, tight-knit atmosphere rooted in traditional South Georgia agriculture and local manufacturing, with convenient highway access to nearby hubs like Tifton and Macon when you need a broader selection of shopping or dining.

Families and newcomers find a welcoming community served by local public schools and the nearby Wiregrass Georgia Technical College campus. Downtown carries plenty of character, from shows at the historic Grand Theatre to exhibits at the Blue and Gray Museum. You will also quickly notice one of the town's most famous quirks: wild Burmese chickens that wander through neighborhoods and parks, celebrated every spring with the lively Wild Chicken Festival.
