Flanagan, IL

Flanagan is a Livingston County village on Illinois Route 116, about twelve miles west of Pontiac and ten miles east of Woodford. Patrick, Edward, and Peter Flanagan laid out the village in 1880 on land they owned, and the place was incorporated two years later. The old Illinois Central branch through Nebraska Township helped connect the village to produce markets, while artesian wells supplied water for homes and fire protection.

Legion Lake, on the west side of town, began as four smaller man-made lakes and now has a walking trail and park shelter. That gives Flanagan a bit of water-centered public space in an otherwise farm-dominated part of Livingston County. The village’s location keeps it tied to Pontiac for county business and to the surrounding towns for work, school, and shopping. The 2020 census counted 1,010 residents. Flanagan’s story is built from a family name, a railroad town plan, artesian water, and a small lake that turned leftover basins into a local landmark.
