Flanders sits quietly along the Peconic River and Flanders Bay, offering a relaxed, wooded setting on the western edge of Southampton Town. While it is part of Southampton for municipal services, daily life is closely tied to Riverhead just across the water. The area includes a mix of residential neighborhoods, protected pine barrens, and waterfront streets. If you are house hunting here, it pays to check individual flood maps and property lines carefully, since lots can shift from dry pine woods to tidal wetlands in the span of a few blocks.

Flanders Road, or Route 24, serves as the main spine of the community. Along this road, the David W. Crohan Community Center provides a central gathering spot with youth programs, senior lunches, and recreational classes. Just down the road, Hubbard County Park opens up huge stretches of salt marsh and pine woods, with scenic trails and spots like Penny Pond for weekend fishing and kayaking. Whenever you need grocery stores, big-box shopping, train connections, or a night out at a restaurant, downtown Riverhead is only a quick hop across the bridge.

Flanders is also home to the Big Duck, one of Long Island's most famous roadside landmarks. A local farmer built it in the 1930s to sell Pekin ducks to passing drivers, complete with red Model T taillights for eyes. Today, Suffolk County runs the duck as a quirky visitor center and gift shop. Every winter, residents gather for the annual holiday duck lighting, a fun local tradition that nods to the area's farming history. Year-round, it stands as an unmistakable marker on the drive through town.
