Flandreau, SD

Flandreau is Moody County's seat on the Big Sioux River, about 40 minutes north of Sioux Falls and seven miles east of Interstate 29. The 2020 census counted 2,372 residents. The river runs through the city's physical and civic story: the city park sits along its bank with a campground, boat ramp, ball fields, playgrounds, shelters, and the Oxbow Wetlands Nature Trail. Flandreau grew as a trading community in the river corridor, and its county-seat role still puts courthouse, schools, and services in the same small-city orbit.

The city also sits beside the Flandreau Santee Sioux Indian Reservation, whose land follows the Big Sioux in Moody County. Flandreau Indian School, a Bureau of Indian Education off-reservation boarding school for Native American students in grades 9–12, occupies a campus on North Crescent Street. South Veterans Street leads to Royal River Casino + Hotel, opened in 1990 and operated by the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe. Between the river park, school campus, tribal institutions, and county offices, Flandreau's daily map is shaped by several governments and communities meeting in one valley city.
