Flatonia, TX

Flatonia is a Fayette County town on Interstate 10 and the Union Pacific line, about halfway between Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and Victoria. The 2020 census counted 1,308 residents. The railroad laid out the community in 1874 on land bought from William Alexander Faries, and the town took its name from merchant F. Flato. U.S. 90 runs through the center as Main Street, so the old rail-and-highway pattern is still easy to read on the ground for generations. Railroad Park holds the best piece of that story: a preserved 1902 switching tower, a caboose, and the town jail.

Downtown, the E. A. Arnim Archives and Museum traces settlement and the development of nearby rural communities. Each October, Czhilispiel brings Czech, German, and other Central European traditions into a festival built around chili, music, and local fundraising.
