Flatwoods, WV

Flatwoods is a small, quiet community in Braxton County with fewer than 300 residents. Set in the rolling hills of central West Virginia, it sits right along Interstate 79, making it easy to hop on the highway and travel north or south across the state. The surrounding terrain is gently rolling and relatively flat compared to the steeper mountain ridges nearby, which is how the town originally got its name. It offers a relaxed, rural setting where you get scenic country views and plenty of breathing room.

The area is best known for the legendary Flatwoods Monster, a bizarre 1952 UFO sighting that remains a favorite piece of Appalachian folklore. The town embraces the quirky history with giant green monster chairs placed around the area for fun photo ops. Flatwoods also sits right near the geographic center of West Virginia, giving residents quick access to regional shopping, local community events, and outdoor recreation at nearby Sutton Lake.
