About Flora

Flora’s story starts with a spring and a covered wagon. John and Sarah Flora arrived in October 1827 with their son Abraham, stopped at a spring, and built the family’s life around the spot. John eventually purchased 280 acres, and the town that grew there kept his surname. A post office arrived in 1873, while later rail service tied Flora to the Vandalia line between Logansport and Camden. The town had 2,094 residents in the 2020 census and now sits in Carroll County’s Monroe Township, within the Lafayette metropolitan area.

Center from Columbia in Flora

Flora’s strongest local institution is its library, which has become the keeper of old family photographs, school memorabilia, and town stories. Its digitization project gives descendants a way to put names back onto faces before the memories disappear. The Carroll Consolidated School Corporation serves the community through Carroll Elementary and Carroll Junior/Senior High School, keeping the school connection close too. Flora is not a place built around one flashy landmark; its character is more intimate: a founding family, a spring that still marks the town’s beginning, rail-era growth, and a library where the community keeps sorting through its own past.
