Floyd, VA

Floyd is the county-seat town of Floyd County, Virginia, set along U.S. 221 in the Blue Ridge southwest of Roanoke. The 2020 census counted 448 residents. The town was first called Jacksonville, then took the Floyd name in honor of Virginia governor John Floyd. The Floyd Historic District, Floyd Presbyterian Church, Glenanna, Phlegar Farm, and Oakdale are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, giving the small courthouse town an unusually deep collection of historic markers.

Music is the part of Floyd that visitors notice first. The Floyd Country Store's Friday Night Jamboree brings bluegrass and old-time musicians to South Locust Street, where fair-weather listeners may also find banjo-and-fiddle jams outside the store. The town is part of Virginia's Crooked Road music network, but its music life feels local because it spills into a general store, a street, and the people who gather there each week. Floyd combines county offices and an old town grid with a cultural scene that reaches well beyond its size.
