Fordland, MO

Fordland sits on the southeastern edge of the Springfield Plateau in southern Webster County, along U.S. 60 between Diggins and Rogersville. The town was platted in 1882, its post office opened that same year, and its name came from J. S. Ford, a comptroller for the Kansas City, Fort Scott and Memphis Railroad. A later St. Louis–San Francisco depot record places the rail line along the town's southern edge. Fordland's first map was made by a railroad, a highway, and the Ozark plateau around them.

Fordland Memorial Library gives the town a newer civic landmark. Established in 2017, it opened at 157 West Main Street in 2021 with free Wi-Fi, public laptops, printing, and a fourth-Saturday story time. Its calendar also reaches into the wider town through spring and fall yard sales, a fall car-and-bike show, book fairs, vendor booths, and children's programs. Fordland reads as a southern Missouri town where the old rail corridor still sits beneath U.S. 60 and the library has become a practical gathering place on Main Street.
