Forman, ND

Forman is a city in and the county seat of Sargent County, North Dakota, with 509 residents at the 2020 census. Colonel Cornelius Forman began platting the town in 1883 after securing land near the center of the new county; the city was officially recognized in 1884. He donated lots for the courthouse, school, and Congregational church, giving the young settlement its civic spine. Forman became the county seat in 1886 after the first county election moved that role from Milnor. For a time, its legal status was distinctive: until 1967, Forman was North Dakota's only incorporated town, before state law classified all incorporated communities as cities.

That county-seat role still puts government in the middle of town. The Sargent County Courthouse on Main Street houses court facilities, the sheriff, social services, tax administration, emergency coordination, and other county offices. Around it, Forman's current community map includes Sargent Central Public School, a public library with children's activities and free computers, City Hall's meeting space, a senior center, and Lake Lithia and Central Park. Sargent County has 523,815 acres of farmland, so county roads and agricultural work remain part of the setting beyond Main Street. Forman works as a service center for that broad rural grid, with civic offices and everyday gathering places gathered into a town of about five hundred.
