Fort Braden, FL

Set along the Ochlockonee River about 18 miles southwest of Tallahassee, Fort Braden started in the 1830s as a small riverfront outpost named for a local settler's wife, Virginia Braden. As soldiers departed, farming families moved in, turning the area into a quiet rural community of homesteads, churches, and schoolhouses surrounded by pine forests. That relaxed country atmosphere still defines the neighborhood, making it an appealing spot for people who want space and quiet within easy reach of the city.

Today, daily life often centers around Lake Talquin and a few familiar local landmarks. The old 1928 brick elementary school now serves as the neighborhood community center, connected by a shaded walking trail to the Jane G. Sauls Library and nearby park grounds. Between local boat launches, wooded trails, and a simple commute along State Road 20 into Tallahassee, Fort Braden gives residents a slower pace of living with plenty of outdoor recreation right in the backyard.
