Getting your bearings in Fort Collins is refreshingly simple. The Rocky Mountain foothills frame the western edge of town, while the Cache la Poudre River winds quietly along the north side of Old Town. Just south of the historic center sits Colorado State University's sprawling green campus, surrounded by tree-lined residential neighborhoods. College Avenue runs straight north to south, tying Old Town to the commercial districts and shopping centers in Midtown and south Fort Collins. The city grew from a 19th-century military outpost and farming settlement into the vibrant college town it is today. In fact, the historic downtown provided the direct architectural inspiration for Disneyland's Main Street, U.S.A.
