About Fort Davis

Fort Davis is Jeff Davis County's seat at the southeastern foot of the Davis Mountains, where State 17 crosses the old San Antonio-El Paso route. The town grew beside the military post established in 1854, first as the rough settlement of Chihuahua, and later became a county seat in its own right. The fort operated until 1891 and still marks the local map, while Limpia Creek gives the place its water line. Fort Davis is West Texas in a mountain-fort shape.
